BBC Throws Open Archives for Doctor Who's 45th
November 23, 2008
It was a cold, rainy night in November. 1963. The world was grieving the violent death of President John Kennedy. And, British TV viewers barely noticed the premiere of a new family science fiction adventure on the BBC.
Now, as Nov. 23 rolls around again, it's safe to say viewers have noticed as Doctor Who fans celebrate the 45th anniversary of TV's longest-running sci-fi show with a virtual stroll through the recently revealed BBC archives.
The newly exposed collection unveils production memos, network documents and show images from Doctor Who's history -- especially highlighting the show's creation and early days on the air. Perhaps most interesting is a memo revealing how the BBC's crown jewel almost never materialized out of the time/space continuum.
It seems that, even 45 years ago, programming executives couldn't find it with both hands.
