Some people thought that the first celebrity casualty of 2008 would be Britney Spears, whose roller-coaster life of late has worried her friends and fans. As fate would have it, however, the first big young star to pass away this year is—Heath Ledger.
Ledger’s death from a suspected accidental drug overdose has shocked millions all over the world, because the Aussie actor was one of Hollywood’s least controversial and troublesome stars.
Prescription drugs
—Which is not to say that he wasn’t troubled. Friends narrate that, some days before his mysterious demise, Ledger slept only two hours a day and looked disturbingly frazzled, hence the prescription drugs found in his New York City apartment.
But, would such a popular star even think of ending it all? No way, say friends who point out that the actor loved his 2-year-old daughter to bits.
Ironically, Ledger’s recent statement about his love for his daughter has also been used to “prove” that his death could have been a suicide:
“I feel good about dying,” he is quoted to have said, “because I can now live in her.” —Hold your horses, though, because he quickly followed up with: “But, at the same time, you don’t want to die, because you want to be around for the rest of her life!”
Make of that what you will, but the fact remains that Ledger was one of Hollywood’s most successful and gifted male stars still in their 20s. He won raves for his pained performance in “Brokeback Mountain,” and his portrayal of The Joker in the forthcoming Batman film, “The Dark Knight,” is being described as another thespic triumph.
So, his death is definitely a big loss for Hollywood. Instructively, however, the US film capital has had more than its share of unexpected stellar deaths, led by the most untimely passing of James Dean at the very apex of his all-too-brief career.
It’s similarly instructive to learn that some observers recently shared that Ledger reminded them of Dean, due to his edgy acting talent and uncompromising search for challenging roles.
In fact, after he had become a star, he kept turning down the usual leading-man roles and chose to play less matinee-idol parts like the gay cowboy in “Brokeback Mountain,” to keep expanding his thespic horizons.
Legacy
It isn’t likely that Heath Ledger will be remembered, but he will be missed. And we’ll make it a point to watch him in “The Dark Knight” when it comes out. |
