There's a new Robin Hood Film coming our way starring Russell Crowe who will be playing the Sheriff of Nottingham(a good guy?) in a twisted version of Robin Hood Directed by Ridley Scott , the film will be called Nottingham than Robin Hood.
Ridley Scott says he will push Robin Hood remake 'towards reality'
FILMING is to begin in February on director Ridley Scott's Nottingham - a remake of the Robin Hood legend starring Russell Crowe.
Scott, 70, says previous screen versions of the outlaw, including Errol Flynn's performance in 1938 and Kevin Costner's interpretation in 1991's Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves, failed to hit the target.
"I am trying to think of the last good one," Scott (pictured right) told The Sunday Times. "Errol Flynn? A bit cheesy? A big cheese. God bless him. Kevin Costner? In the wig, you mean? The one I thought was the best, frankly, was Mel Brooks's Men in Tights [see picture at top], because Cary Elwes [who played Robin] was quite a comic."
But he says he will avoid putting Crowe in tights and feathered cap in favour of a tougher performance.
"Think of Gladiator," said Scott. "Everyone sniggered because they thought I was going to do a sandal and toga movie. But I knew exactly how to do it. And I know how to do Robin Hood."
Scott describes his Robin Hood as a social democrat rebelling once King John introduces taxation after his brother, Richard the Lionheart, has bankrupted England to fund the Crusades.
He said: "I will have to keep in the incredible marksmanship. But we will push it towards reality."
The director will not be using Robin Hood's traditional home of Sherwood Forest. Instead, he has opted to shoot the film in woodland in the south of England. "I have found all my forests around London. Whoever says there are no forests around London did not look.I have found trees which have not been pollarded for 250 years."
Scott said Crowe, who has just played an out-of-condition journalist in State of Play, will have to lose weight for the role.
Sienna Miller is to play Maid Marian in the remake which was at one time reported to be depicting Robin Hood as the baddie and the Sheriff of Nottingham in a more favourable light.
It was previously revealed that Crowe is to play both Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham, with the director saying at the time: "[It will be] a good old clever adjustment of characters. One becomes the other."
