How to create the perfect Smallville episode. First cast the amazing Helo from Battlestar Galactica Tahmoh Penikett in the role of an involuntarily meteor infused super baddy with Clark like abilities, and a few more. Throw him up against Clark in a super powered slapping contest. That is it! Seriously! I love it when Smallville tries to tell a story, or have some touching moment of character development, but at the end of the day we just want to see Clark lay the smack down in grand fashion, and this time it delivered.
It is not that “Prototype” does not have a very interesting story behind it. In fact, the characterization of Wes/Ares is actually very well done. He is a conflicted kind of bad guy. He has been screwed over by everybody from every angle in his life; his wife was murdered, Lex’s assortment of evil scientists has messed with his Dna, this guy is not having a good life.
So to get the plot thing out of the way: yes, Lex still wants to rule the world, and he intends to use Ares to do that. Being in complete control of Ares/Wes, he has him take out a Senator. Subsequently, Lionel lobbies for Ma Kent to take the vacant seat. However, is she a republican, or a Democrat? Anne Coulter would like to know.
There is a moment, when Wes runs into Lois, that he snaps out of programmed-to-kill mode and actually begins to wrestle with what he has done, but thankfully this is short lived and Clark shows up and kills him.
Lana, meanwhile, is snooping on Lex and is getting a good idea of what the whole Ares thing is all about: World domination. Lex is definitely pumping up the bad husband vibes, dropping subtle “sure, I would kill ya honey” hints, but that is not so surprising, now is it?
The end of the episode gives you a chill. Lex and his cohorts are kvetching about the loss of Ares, but we are shown a room of Ares clones. Totally crazy. Hope this does not mean Helo is leaving Galactica anytime soon!
On an ‘I need something to complain about’ note, I really didn’t see this as much of a lead up to the events of the finale, which means the finale will probably be a one shot. Who knows, maybe we’ll be pleasantly surprised.
alot of the battlestar guys are doing smallville and other roles
