In this age of instant reboots it's certainly not too soon to talk about restarting 'The Crow' movie franchise. Today's Variety reports that plans to relaunch the series, based on the comics by James O'Barr, are now taking flight.

According to Variety, Stephen Norrington has signed on to write and direct a new film that will reinvent the series.

Fans recall that the original 'Crow' launched in 1994 under the directing eye of then relative unknown Alex Proyas ('Knowing') and with rising star Brandon Lee as its leading man. The production turned tragic when Lee was accidentally killed on the set of the movie. The franchise never overcame that event. What followed were a string of increasingly terrible sequels and a made-for-syndication TV series. The final film 'Crow: Wicked Prayer' crashed onto the DVD market in 2005.

“Whereas Proyas’ original was gloriously gothic and stylized, the new movie will be realistic, hard-edged and mysterious, almost documentary-style,” Norrington told Daily Variety.

Norrington himself has had no easy time of it. He first appeared on fan radar by making 'Blade' into an unexpected hit for Marvel and New Line. Five years later he made 'The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen', a movie that Variety says left the director feeling demoralized. He hasn't directed a feature film since then.

Ryan Kavanaugh’s Relativity Media is negotiating with producer Ed Pressman to acquire the film franchise and finance the film.

The first crow was good, all the others sucked IMO. They don't need to make anymore of them, lol.
