Ed Quinn interviewVisitEureka.net - Well - first things first! Thanks so much for agreeing to do this!
Ed Quinn - Let's get started.
VE.net - Tell me about yourself. What are you up to when you're not on set filming? Please tell us about your history as an actor. Do you have a desire to direct or write any episodes of Eureka?
Ed Quinn - When I'm not filming, I tend to relax. Lot of surfing, motorcycle riding, playing and recording music, and writing. As for EUReKA: Write-No. Direct-Maybe.
VE.net - We found out through a podcast that you enjoy singing. What types of music do you sing? Have you or will you be recording your music in the future? Are you a tenor, baritone or bass?
Ed Quinn - I consider myself a "guitarist who sings". I've been playing guitar since I was 12 years old, but only started singing and recording the last 8 or 9 years. I enjoy playing hard rock blues...but I'm a bass-baritone vocally. I've been working for a few years now to create my own sound, and I'm think I've found it. I've finally started to record some new material.
VE.net - Let's talk about Nathan Stark. He is the "anti-hero" that you have developed into an involved, well-rounded 3-dimensional character that people care about. You are not the "bad guy" but the man in charge of life and death potentially worldwide. You crave power, but you are open in your agenda to master and understand the artifact, to be in control of Eureka and to win the heart of Allison Blake. You genuinely desire the success and security of Eureka; hardly the plans of a "bad guy." So, having said that, do you think the relationship between Nathan and Allison has any hope of reconciliation?
Ed Quinn - Yes, I do. I worked VERY hard... scene by scene... to ensure that the audience wouldn't look at Nathan as a cliche, Machiavellian, villain. I felt it was important for the show. I felt it was important that Carter had a real adversary... someone who would challenge Carter for Allison's affection. The "Love Triangle" can only work if the audience is torn over whom to root for.
VE.net - Are you personally rooting for the reconciliation between Nathan and Allison, or do you think that Jack and Allison are a better match?
Ed Quinn - Are you asking ED QUINN the fan, or ED QUINN the actor? ... Because, the answers are very different.
VE.net - What about the artifact? You now have a sample of it. How wills this change Eureka? How will this change your character?
Ed Quinn - Just wait for the Season 2 premier.
VE.net - What about the relationship between Nathan and Henry? Does Kim's death have an effect on this?
Ed Quinn - Oh yes... but I think the audience is going to be shocked at the direction this story line takes.
VE.net - Do you think that Jack and Nathan will have the chance to work together to solve something, and come to a truce of sorts?
Ed Quinn - Absolutely. I think we will see the characters sway between "utter annoyance" and "begrudging respect".
VE.net - Has the character of Stark developed the way you hoped he would?
Ed Quinn - Yes, for the most part. As an actor, you work as hard as you can to be perfect, to always be true to your character. You can only hope the audience comes along for the ride.
VE.net - Will we find out more about Stark this coming season - his past, his Nobel, his relationship with Alli?
Ed Quinn - Oh yeah.
VE.net - What drew you to Eureka?
Ed Quinn - The script, the character, and the Creators.
VE.net - How much improvising were you allowed to do on the scripts or was there no need for it at all? Will you be having more input into Nathan in the second Season?
Ed Quinn - We don't really improvise... we just make sure every scene works. The ones that do, we leave alone... the ones that don't, the Executive Producers try to fix with the help of the writers and the cast. It's all about making this show work... line-by-line, scene-by-scene, and script-by-script.
VE.net - In a podcast (and by the way, will you be participating in the second season podcasts?) it was mentioned that the second season possibly will be darker. Do you see that happening?
Ed Quinn - I've only seen the first 4 scripts, but it seems headed that way. As for the Podcasts, you'd have to ask Colin. He's LORD OF THE POD... I just wait by my phone every week and hope to get a call. (I'm kidding, of course. I'm sure there will be more this Season.)
VE.net - Let's talk Season Two - and Abby! How do you feel about the entire Abby idea? Do you think it will give Nathan a better shot at pulling Allison away from Carter, or do you expect Abby will just push Carter closer to Allison?
Ed Quinn - I think it works in Nathan's favor, because Abby doesn't just stroll into town... she brings a whole pile of problems and baggage with her. (And by the way, Olivia d'Abo is amazing)
VE.net - Have you heard anything about what type of woman Abby is going to be? Will we love her, or hate her?
Ed Quinn - I think the audience will love her... And it's going to be a huge problem for Carter.
VE.net - Does Nathan discover the Consortium? Is it an ongoing undercurrent or will it be exposed? Will we find out who in Global Dynamics is behind it? Or is it not your place to reveal that? If so - how about just your opinion of what you think is going to happen regarding that!?
Ed Quinn - No comment.
VE.net - The conversation about your wardrobe for Stark has come up, and will you be reusing any of the suits you wore last year?
Ed Quinn - Absolutely... but with character change comes wardrobe change.
VE.net - What happened to your clothes budget?
Ed Quinn - It vanished faster than you can say Hugo Boss.
VE.net - How is filming going? You told me the first day was "great stuff" - still the same?
Ed Quinn - Yes. The vibe on the set is amazing. Everyone is just thrilled to be tackling a 2nd season.
VE.net - What about the relationship between cast members? Who gets on with whom better? Who do you get along with best?
Ed Quinn - We really have been blessed. There's no one on the set... cast or crew... who I don't consider a friend. You just don't see this kind of atmosphere very often.
VE.net - So pretend you're a fan. What is your favorite episode from the first Season?
Ed Quinn - Dr. Nobel.
VE.net - And back to being an actor. What was your favourite scene from the first Season?
Ed Quinn - When Beverly poisoned Susan Perkins in the pilot. There was also a scene Jordan shot in "Callister" that didn't make the final cut that was unbelievable. She had moments in that scene that were untouchable.
VE.net - How about face recognition? Are you able to go to a restaurant without getting mobbed?
Ed Quinn - No mobbing... just very wonderful fans.
VE.net - Can you tell us the story behind the kilt pictures? Oh yes - we have seen them!
Ed Quinn - It was a charity event... "Friends Of Scotland" I believe. Great people... good fun.
VE.net - Will you be making any public appearances? We would love to include them in the website as you book them in order that Eureka fans can hopefully meet you.
Ed Quinn - We are starting to ramp up the Season 2 Press... but right now it's all about cranking out Season 2.
VE.net - Thanks again for doing this!
Ed Quinn - No worries.
