New Star Trek to premiere at the Sydney Opera House on April 7
March 20, 2009
Article from: Australian Associated Press
DIRECTOR JJ Abrams' new Star Trek movie will have its world premiere at the Sydney Opera House next month, presented by Aussie star Eric Bana.
Abrams, Bana and co-stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Karl Urban will present the blockbuster to 1600 tastemakers in art, design, entertainment, fashion, media and politics on April 7.
It is only the third time a film has debuted at the Sydney Opera House, and the first time a premiere has been held in the concert hall.
"Not only are we honoured to have JJ Abrams and the cast here in Sydney for the world premiere of the stunning new Star Trek, we are also very excited to present this event at one of Australia's - and the world's - most famous locations, Sydney Opera House," said Mike Selwyn, managing director of Paramount Pictures Australia.
The re-imagined story, based on creator Gene Roddenberry's original television series, also stars Chris Hemsworth, Simon Pegg, Winona Ryder, Jennifer Morrison and Zoe Saldana, with a cameo by original Spock Leonard Nimoy.
The Sydney premiere kicks off a world tour that will touch down in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, New Zealand, Russia, Spain and the UK.
Star Trek opens in Australia on May 7, ahead of the US release on May 8.
Yay Australia is getting the film first. Bring it on!

Sydney Trekkers in warp drive over new Star Trek flick
April 07, 2009
THE US cast of the latest Star Trek film has arrived in Sydney for tonight's world premiere amid an international fan furore over the decision to launch the movie in Australia a month ahead of its commercial roll-out.
Some 1600 guests will take their seats in the Opera House to catch a glimpse of stars Eric Bana, Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto.
Quinto, who plays Spock, and Pine, who takes the role of Captain Kirk, hit the footpaths for a run just hours after arriving from Los Angeles yesterday.

They'll be joined at the showing by Bana, who is barely recognisable as the villain Nero in the $218.5 million film which chronicles the early days of the USS Enterprise.
Insiders have suggested it is Bana who was instrumental in bringing the premiere to Sydney.
However, a Paramount Pictures spokeswoman said yesterday Sydney was chosen because the US studio wanted to launch the film in an "iconic building" in a leading city.
The decision has been greeted with surprise by Trekkers around the world including Leonard Nimoy. The 77-year-old actor, who first portrayed Spock, has a cameo role in the latest film.

There's uproar from Trekkers worldwide of the Sydney Opera House Premiere,.

TREKKERS around the world are fuming that studio bosses announced the film's world premiere would take place at the Sydney Opera House on April 7 - a month before its worldwide release.
This will kick off a world tour that touches down in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Russia, Spain and Britain.
According to the Daily Mail the Australian premiere has disappointed Trekkers in the town of Vulcan in Alberta, Canada.
Leonard Nimoy, 77, who first portrayed the Vulcan Mr. Spock, had joined a campaign for the movie premiere to be held in the small farming town.
But the campaign proved unsuccessful - because the town has no cinema.
The film is set before the original ‘60s TV series and gives the backstory to the leading characters of Captain James T Kirk and Spock and their infamous rivalry.
The film takes Trekkers back in time to see a young Kirk, played by Chris Pine, and Spock, played by Heroes actor Zachary Quinto, enrol at the Starfleet Academy in San Francisco, where their learning quickly moves from the classroom to space when Romulan villain Nero (Australia's Eric Bana) travels from the future to threaten life on the United Federation of Planets.
In a departure from the original style, the young Kirk swigs booze and has a raunchy sex scene with beautiful communications officer Uhura (Zoe Saldana).
Director J.J. Abrams originally said he hoped to find a cameo for William Shatner, who played Captain Kirk in the original Star Trek TV series, but didn't want the script to "shove him in because that would be a disaster".

Nimoy shows the new film before the world premiere? Paramount Pictures will not be happy.
Quote:
While a world of Trekkers believed the new J.J. Abrams Star Trek would premiere in Sydney, Australia Tuesday, Leonard Nimoy made a surprise appearance in Austin, Texas Monday night to screen the film for an unsuspecting audience.
A theater full of Trek fans showed up in the Texas capital thinking they were going to see a new print of the classic Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and 10 minutes of Abrams' reboot, all organized by Ain't It Cool News. But, Nimoy shocked the house by announcing they would in fact see the entire new movie just hours before it made its international bow in Sydney.
SYDNEY (Reuters) - The 11th Star Trek movie in 30 years had its world premiere on Tuesday, its markedly younger cast boldly going along the red carpet to a makeshift cinema in the Sydney Opera House .
Chris Pine, 28, who plays a cadet-aged James T. Kirk, admitted he'd never met William Shatner , who starred as the original Captain Kirk in the television series dating back to 1966 as well as the first Star Trek movies.
But he said he watched the TV show "quite a bit."
"All it was doing was making me think about what the best way I could do a William Shatner impersonation," Pine said. "It wasn't helping bringing this story to life."
Hundreds of fans, including one wearing "Spock" ears, waited for hours to meet the leading men who spent nearly an hour walking the red carpet, signing autographs and talking with journalists.
"It's hard to believe Eric Bana plays a meanie when he comes across as such a nice guy," said Alicia Wetherley, who drove from central Australia to the Opera House for the premiere.
Bana plays Nero, the film's heavily-tattooed Romulan villain bent on avenging the destruction of his planet.
He said all the film's cast "did everything they could" to come up with something fresh this time around.
The plot follows the young lives of the original cast from Gene Roddenberry's TV show as they find their places on the flight deck of the U.S.S. Enterprise as junior officers.
It was directed by J.J. Abrams, director of "Mission Impossible III" and " Lost ."
"I was never a huge Star Trek fan growing up and so what I hope people will experience when they see the movie is one that stands on its own," Abrams said. "It's a huge action spectacle but at the core it is got a big heart," said Abrams.
Zachary Quinto plays Spock, the role made famous by Leonard Nimoy , 77, who has a cameo in the film.
Nimoy had joined a campaign for the movie to hold its premiere in the small farming town of Vulcan in Alberta, Canada, that was unsuccessful, partly because the town has no cinema.
Gavin Vonhoff, a 27-year-old IT engineer from Canberra, said he hoped the film would carry "a message of hope to all Star Trek fans that Roddenberry's spirit was still alive" 18 years after his death.
"Star Trek" opens in Australian cinemas on May 7, one day before opening in the United States.
